What is Proud Flesh?
Proud Flesh
Proud flesh. When a horse wounds itself granulation tissue covers the area of the wound. New skin cells then grow over this granulation tissue and eventually close the wound.

Taking a Horse's Pulse

The normal pulse rate at rest is 36-42 beats per minute.

Young stock and ponies tend to be a bit faster up to 45 beats per minute.

Feel the pulse with your fingers, not with your thumb which itself has an artery which you may confuse with the horse's pulse.

Feel the pulse in one of three places:

Under the top of the lower jaw, gently pressing the facial artery against the inner surface of the bone

The easiest place; on the artery on the horse's cheek just above and behind the eye.

On the inside of the foreleg, level with the knee joint where the artery crosses immediately over the bone.
