Ponies and Children’s Responsibilities

April 18, 2008 – 11:56 pm

Even if your parents pay for your pony, it is a good idea to take responsibility for some things, and make a note of how much everything costs, so you can appreciate budgeting. This skill is obviously one which will stand you in good stead in future when you are responsible for your own money. Learning how much things cost, and how you can save on some things, is vital in life.

How can you do it?

Divide your pony’s monthly requirements into essential and non-essential. Under the essential column will go things like agistment bills, feed, shoeing, worming. Under nonessential will go items such as new brushes, carrots, riding lessons, and clothes for yourself. Some non-essential items may find their way under the essential column occasionally. If your pony rips his rug and needs a new one, for example. For this reason, you need to have a contingency fund, for emergencies.

Looking at how much you spend every week, every month and every year will show up where you can cut expenditure. Do you really need another headcollar when your pony has three already? And are your lessons really teaching you something?
