There will always be a demand for workers in the horse industry. Depending on who you work for, you may even get the chance to travel interstate or overseas.

Wages can be low for some horse jobs and there are plenty of awful employers out there who will exploit workers. Especially youngsters whose enthusiasm is soon worn down through long hours and horrible pay. Some don’t get paid at all.

Kind of horse jobs available:

Groom: Also known as a stablehand or strapper. Your basic tasks will be to take care of the horses in your charge, which means feeding, grooming, mucking out, cleaning gear.

Racehorse Trainer: This is a job requiring an extensive horse background and you will also need to gain qualifications and lots of hands on experience.

Mounted Police: You can’t join the police force and go straight into the mounted branch. You need to be in the force for at least four years and obtain the rank of Senior Constable. Duties include grooming, training, street patrol, riot and crowd control.

Trackrider: Trackriders ride racehorses for their early morning training. You should be aged 16+, weigh between 50-75kg and not afraid to ride fit thoroughbreds. Early morning starts means this is usually a live in position and grooming, mucking out stables is often part of the job.

There’s plenty of horse courses out there where you can gain qualifications and experience !
