Horse Mange


The term commonly applied to those infectious skin troubles caused by parasites which attack the skin. Some forms are more difficult to cure than others due to the germs burrowing into the deeper layers of the skin. They are contagious to humans, and always very difficult to cure. Irritation is extreme and constant.

Treatment
Use specific mange treatments. Isolate the affected animal, thoroughly disinfect all harness, clothing and brushes etc.



Meningitis


Inflammation of the covering membranes of the brain and spinal cord. It may arise from injuries, worms, concussion, strangles, tuberculosis, teething, ulceration of ears.



Symptoms
In the early stages the horse is dull and hangs the head, eyes are bloodshot and partially closed, no appetite, easily excited and later becomes unmanageable, is partially blind and seems to obtain some relief by pressing the head into a fence or wall, temperature high, trembling.

Muscle Soreness



Indicated by the horse being tied up, a condition which may arise from a number of causes. Young horses in work are subjects, horse may become affected after a hard race. All the muscles seem to become stiff and sore, tense and knotty, but it is most evident in the shoulders.

Treatment
Selenium and vitamin E, massage with liniment. Keep warm and give light exercise until improved.
