Undershot Jaw



Parrot Mouth

This condition is commonly known as parrot mouth.


Signs
Upper and lower incisors do not meet because lower jaw is too short.
Possibly genetic.

Treatment
If lower incisors tend to push up into hard palate they should be filed and checked every 3 months.

Urticaria



(HIVES, NETTLE RASH)
A disease of the blood, skin and general system, allergy which manifests itself suddenly.  Swellings about lips, eyes, head, neck and legs.

Cause
Exposure to stinging nettles, insect bites. Excessive concentrates, eg. (oats). Eating any food to which the horse has developed an allergy.

Symptoms
Sudden appearance of swellings on skin, varying in size, pea to flat shaped. No pain, very little itchiness,skin in the region of lips, nostrils, eyelids, throat, and hips most commonly involved.

Treatment
Antihistamines, symptoms may disappear suddenly. Change diet.



UMBILICAL HERNIA


This is a congenital defect. Sometimes a loop of intestine passing through an opening  in the muscular wall becomes twisted. It strangles itself and cuts off the blood supply to it in that section.

Signs
Swelling in region of navel.

Causes
Fatty tissue or intestine passes through hole in muscle group and presses against skin of abdominal wall.

Treatment
Some small umbilical hernias close up and disappear over a period of time.  Check with your veterinarian to evaluate hernia and decide if surgery is necessary.
